Mattresses have a very strong association with Back issues. The number of people I have worked with who would have spent thousands of dollars trying to find that perfect mattress for your Back pain is huge. In fact, that’s how mattresses are marketed to us these days. An ‘Orthopedic’ mattress will cost you a lot more than an average one. But how much do they really impact our recovery from Back Problems?
Let’s break it down here: A mattress that is extremely soft and allows your spine to sag into it as you sleep through the night is obviously not a very good one. The softness allows your spine to deform and lose its lordosis or c-shaped curve throughout the night leading to more pain and stiffness in the morning.
A mattress that is too firm will be the exact opposite. Because it’s so stern, it will get uncomfortable leading to poor quality sleep. But it is preferred over a soft mattress.
A mattress that is semi-firm is just the right density and it supports the spine throughout the night and hence will be the best fit in most cases. Ofcourse, what a mattress does is only supplements your recovery from Back problems and never will be a complete solution to it. Don’t get carried away by all the marketing around it. More often than not, a decent semi-firm mattress will give you the comfort and support you need for a restful night time sleep.
Most importantly, do not expect your brand new mattress to solve your back problem. You will have to do it yourself.
